How can we help?
How can we help?
We aim for equality of opportunity and high expectations for all children and young people (CYP), through highly skilled, consistent, motivating and inspiring practice.
We work with children and young people, from 0-25 years old, and their families to promote a range of skills, foster independence and ensure readiness for school and preparation for adulthood.
We provide support for CYP with cognition and learning needs; communication and interaction needs, including autism; social, emotional and mental health needs; sensory and physical/medical needs. We work in partnership with staff in settings to enable all pupils to achieve positive outcomes as they progress through education and prepare for adulthood.
The Graduated Approach
The Code of Practice 2015 introduced the category of SEN Support, replacing School Action and School Action Plus. The Graduated Approach of “Assess, Plan, Do, Review” removes barriers to learning and ensures that effective provision is in place. There is a financial element in each school’s budget to meet the needs of pupils receiving SEN Support.
One of the biggest changes within the SEND reforms has been a shift away from narrow objectives or targets, towards a greater emphasis upon outcomes. The SEND Code of Practice states that “an outcome is the benefit or difference made to an individual as a result of an intervention” (Code of Practice 9.66) and outcomes should describe the next step that the child or young person will take towards a happy, healthy, independent and secure adulthood.
As a service we adhere to the following principles for SEND support:
Quality First Teaching: differentiated and personalised to meet the individual needs of CYP. Teachers should set high expectations for every pupil. They should plan stretching work for pupils whose attainment is significantly above the expected standard and should have an even greater obligation to plan lessons for pupils who have low levels of prior attainment, or come from disadvantaged backgrounds.
Teachers should use appropriate assessment to set targets which are deliberately ambitious. (Teachers’ Standard 5)
SEN Support: Special Educational Provision that goes beyond usual differentiated and personalised teaching and learning approaches and that is additional to, or different from, that made for other children of the same age. Schools and colleges must use their best endeavours to ensure that such provision is made for those who need it. Schools should use The Graduated Approach of “Assess, Plan, Do, Review” to remove barriers to learning and must work with parents. CYP at SEN Support will have regular “Team Around the Family” meetings as part of the “Assess, Plan, Do, Review” cycle. Schools may involve specialists at any point to advise them on effective support and interventions and should implement strategies recommended by specialists and review their effectiveness.
Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs): the majority of CYP with additional needs will have their needs met within SEN Support. A small minority will require a statutory assessment (EHCA). To inform its decision, the local authority will expect to see evidence of the action taken by the school as part of SEN Support, including best endeavours and The Graduated Approach.
Schools may involve specialists at any point to advise them on effective support and interventions and should implement and review the effectiveness of any strategies recommended by the specialists.
